The Art of Thinking: The WRIST Method

Colleagues

Sometimes when we have been trying to solve a problem for ‘awhile,’ we get stuck.  We continue to use the same arguments, the same logic, and round and round in circles we go to no avail.  I have created the WRIST Method that may be of help to your critical thinking frustration.

The first letter of the WRIST Method stands for Words.  When we need a new perspective and a new direction, to move us forward from being ‘stuck’—the solution can be as simple as changing your words.  All we may need is to thinking differently—using different words from perhaps a different language.

For example, for many who are bi or multilingual, they have the gift of being able to think of a problem in a new language.  If you are thinking in English, what might happen if you thought in Italian, or Spanish, or Dutch.  When we use the words in a new language, we think differently when we are in this mindset.

Next time you become ‘stuck’ in your problem solving, simple translate into a new language and see if this might just shift your thinking!

Be sure to share your stories regarding how this technique worked for you.  Often this problem solving technique can work when we get stuck in our writing as well.   Bellissimo!  We look forward hearing from you.*Smiles*

With respect,

Cheryl
