A topic in the wind this week is about leadership of ourselves. Remember, if we cannot lead ourselves, why would others follow us? Think about the concept of The Golden Palace. One cannot lead from behind a desk or behind the palace walls. Instead, follow the former CEO of Southwest Airlines, Herb Kelleher—walk around management. Kelleher could be found slinging bags with the folks on the ramp, selling tickets with the ticket agents, serving beverages with the flight attendants. Kelleher didn’t stay in his office, send emails, or remain behind his palace guards. Instead, he lead by example from out in the field, NOT behind a desk. Southwest personnel and others from other companies would have followed him anywhere. Thus, get out there, be willing to take a risk. Get out from behind your desk, behind your safety net, behind boundaries. Go be with the people, your staff. Be PART of them. Remember the idea of servant leadership. When we serve others, we serve ourselves. Help others get what THEY want, and you’ll be amazed that you will often get what YOU want.
Remember, get out of the Golden Palace. Put yourself out there. Take a risk. Be willing to fail. Fail faster, succeed sooner. You might just surprise yourself! Go team go!
My best to your success!
