Alignment in Your Writing

Dear Colleagues

The topic for our discussion this week is the concept of writing alignment.  Particularly for the doctoral study, alignment is crucial to the successful understanding by your reader.  For the doctoral study, alignment focus includes the major areas such as the problem statement, purpose statement, method, design, and target sample population.

A good exercise is to think of yourself standing in front of a conference presenting your study findings. In beginning your presentation, you will need to introduce all of the key areas.

How would you present these areas first in ONLY a few words?  ALL details should take no more than 30 seconds.  This exercise might illuminate all areas of your study and how they connect and align.

  • What is the business problem?
  • For whom is this a problem?
  • What are the key performance indicators or symptoms of the problem?
  • Who says this is a problem (research)?
  • What is the method of your study?
  • Why is this method the most effective choice?
  • What is the design?
  • Why is this design the most effective choice?
  • Who is your sample population?
  • Why are they the most knowledgeable people about this problem?
  • How are you going to find them?
  • How many will you talk to and why?

Essentially, this is the oral defense of your doc study where we are simply aligning all pieces of the study.  Remember: it is NOT what we know, but what we can prove.  We as the researcher do not choose elements of the study; we defend the use of these elements through the support of peer reviewed sources to support what we are doing and why.

Think of alignment as simply connecting the dots, weaving a thread of congruency through your study.

In business terms, think of these terms as simply the who, what, where, why, and how of your study.

Forward we go!

My best to your continued success,

Dr. Cheryl Lentz
