Dissertation Writing: Why isn’t our opinion good enough?

Colleagues
As we craft our graduate thesis or dissertation, we need to be aware that our opinions are not enough on their own merits.  Our focus is not what we know, but what we can prove or defend.  For example, when we choose a methodology, it is not our choice as the researcher.  We cannot choose qualitative simply because we do not like statistics (which is a common thought for many of my students! *smiles*).  The methodology is chosen by what the research demands.  We must then defend the choice of methodology by how what we need to know is served by the most effective methodology based on the experts such as Creswell, Cooper and Schindler and others.
Perhaps this is helpful as to why scholarly support is so important to our writing of either the graduate thesis or the doctoral dissertation.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

With respect,

Cheryl
