The Pursuit of the Doctorate and the Importance of Learning how to Fail . . .

Good morning colleagues

Several times this week, colleagues suggested that students who struggle through the pursuit of education struggle as a result of never having learning how to fail.  Isn’t this interesting?  I find that many of my students and editing clients do indeed struggle with receiving feedback.  Their initial reaction to receiving an edited paper that may have more comments than they were expecting or that they wrote themselves is quite daunting.  They feel as if they have failed.  Many express anger at their faculty; many express anger at themselves.  If faculty in  previous classes or in previous degree programs did not provide detailed comments or a careful of APA format for example, the next faculty often become a target for frustration and anger.

Failure is the Only Option

What then is the solution?  Years ago, I published in The Refractive Thinker, Volume 1, my philosophy regarding failure and the importance failure has regarding the success formula. Prior to my own doctoral pursuit, my philosophy was: Failure Was Not An Option.  Now nearly a decade later, my philosophy is that Failure is the ONLY Option.

My strategy is also the title of my published article, Fail Faster, Succeed Sooner.  If we can learn to fail, gracefully and graciously, we may have a much easier time regarding unlocking the secrets of success.  We simply need to learn the words to an old Nat King Cole Song where we simply pull ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and start all over again.

Failure is simply success that hasn’t happened yet. Think of Edison and the light bulb. Edison failed 997 times, where success was found on attempt 998.  Success would not have happened within 997 tries of how NOT to build a light bulb.

The next time you are struggling, simply look to your relationships with failure.  What is your philosophy?  Remember, fail faster, to succeed sooner!

My very best to your future success!
