Publish or Perish: How are you positioning your career?

Publish or Perish is an often used cliche for professional faculty within the academic world.  The reason is easy to understand as institutions of higher learning want to demonstrate the expertise and experience of their faculty that is current and relevant to what is going on in the world.  Students want to attend colleges and universities that have well-accomplished faculty who are changing the world in their field or discipline.

Publishing scholarly research offers the ability for faculty to position their career far more favorably as well.  Why? Many faculty simply don’t publish, or don’t publish often.  As a 19-time published author myself, I am amazed at how impressed many of my colleagues, administrators, as well as students tend to be for doing nothing more than what is recommended and expected of the doctoral scholar.

Seems pretty simple doesn’t it?  Just remember common sense, isn’t often common practice.  Think about the reputation of those willing to do what many are not.  Remember, we as leaders must be the example worthy of being followed.  I cannot be a hypocrite and expect others to do what I myself am either unwilling or unable.

Think of publishing as having the ability to share answers to important questions on the minds of many.  Scholars are in search of answers; business owners and entrepreneurs are in search of answers.  Sounds like a wonderful strategy to connect scholars and business owners together—hence I am know as The Academic EntrepreneurTM, as my mission is just that: to get research off the coffee table and into the hands of people who can use it.

The next time you hear the cliche: Publish or Perish, think about what you have to offer the world, your ideas, your insights, your research, your answers.  What is the world waiting for you to share?  Get busy my friend!  The world awaits!

I welcome your thoughts.

My best,
