Why did you earn a doctorate?

Good morning colleagues

In talking with many of my colleagues this week, the topic of why the pursuit of a doctorate degree has surfaced.  Dr. Tom Woodruff and I wrote a chapter for The Refractive Thinker©: Volume VII: Social Responsibility: entitled: Social Responsibility of Doctoral Scholars.

My question this week is to ask why you pursued your doctoral degree.  What did you want to do with this accomplishment? Did you want to teach? Guest speak? Promotion in Academia? Promotion in Business?  Many of my students struggle with knowing what they want to do when they grow up so to speak. For myself, I took several years before I ‘grew into’ the doctor title, where my path began to emerge in front of me (yet always changing!).

What advice might you offer for the new doctoral graduate?  What would you have liked to have known when you first began?

Thank you for sharing your advice.  I look forward to your story.

My very best to your continued success!
