Dissertation Writing Tips: How to Write With Clarity and Precision

Hello colleagues

This week our focus is on the concept of clarity and precision in one’s writing.  How do we ensure that our reader grasps our intention as we intended?  The best way to accomplish our mission is to always ask why.  Why is what we are offering helpful to the reader? How do we support the merits of our conclusions to prove to our reader that there is a high probability of success?  How do we know what we know? How do we know that we we are offering will work?

For the doctoral author, writing offers a teachable moment.  The goal is to invite our reader to journey with us as we explore new areas to add to the greater body of knowledge.  We simply need to ensure that our writing does not leave any questions in the minds of our reader.

For the dissertation, remember, it is not what we know, but what we can prove.  Our opinions are not relevant here as the dissertation is not an opinion piece.  Instead, the dissertation is an objective study where results are to be generalized from the sample population to the greater population based on objective data.  We need to offer clarity and precision in our writing so as to avoid any bias.  The goal is for others to benefit from the original research we have conducted.

Be sure to share your strategies of how you address clarity and precision in your writing. We look forward hearing from you.*Smiles*

With respect,
